The house is easy to find. Turn west onto Van Buren from U.S. 1 / Baltimore Ave.. Go one short block and across 44th Ave. (there is a stop sign). Our house, 4408 Van Buren, is the first house on your right, a two-story Dutch colonial (next to the house on the corner, which has a wrap-around porch). You park across the street from us, on the south side of the street.
From the Washington Beltway (I-495) or I-95 follow the signs for U.S. 1, South. The exit number is 27 on I-95 southbound, 25B on the beltway (I-495). The exit is near where 95 and 495 come together. Go south on U.S. 1 / Baltimore Ave. about 4.5 miles, and you will be at the University of Maryland. From the University of Maryland, keep going south on U.S. 1. About one mile past the University of Maryland, you will go up a small hill. There is a light at the top of the hill (Queen's Chapel Rd., Amherst Rd., Pineway). Keep going. After the light, Van Buren is the first street on your right. Make a sharp right turn onto Van Buren, cross 44th (stop sign), and our house is just past the corner house.
From the District of Columbia drive out Rhode Island Ave. NE. Rhode Island Ave. is U.S. 1. Coming out of the city, about 3 miles from the district line (Eastern Ave.), you will cross MD 410 (also known as East-West Hwy.). Van Buren is the sixth left after you cross East-West Highway (Sheridan, Tuckerman, Wells [twice], Underwood, Van Buren - it's alphabetical except for Wells). Turn left onto Van Buren (If you get to the light at Queen's Chapel Rd., Amherst Rd., Pineway, you have gone too far.), cross 44th (stop sign), and we're the house next to the corner house.
Also coming out of the District, Michigan Ave. NE turns into MD 500 / Queens Chapel Rd.. Turn right at MD 410/ East West Hwy., which comes soon after the signs for the PG Plaza Metro station. Turn left onto U.S. 1 from 410 / East West. Coming along 410 (East West Highway) from Silver Spring. Drive east past Prince George's Plaza and Adelphi Rd.. Turn left onto U.S. 1 from 410 / East West. Van Buren is the sixth left after you turn off of East-West Highway (Sheridan, Tuckerman, Wells [twice], Underwood, Van Buren - it's alphabetical except for Wells). Turn left onto Van Buren (If you get to the light at Queen's Chapel Rd., Amherst Rd., Pineway, you have gone too far.), cross 44th (stop sign), and we're the house next to the corner house.
Coming from the west via MD 193 / University Blvd.: You might want come south on U.S. 1 and follow the instructions above under Beltway, because they are simple. However, it is quicker to: 1) Turn right (South) onto Adelphi Rd.. 2) Turn left onto Wells Parkway at a light with a left turn lane. 3) Turn right at your third stop sign. This is a four-way stop which technically involves staying on Wells. If you went straight, you'd be on Clagett. By turning, you keep a small stream on your right. 4) Turn left again at the second street (Van Buren). You then cross three streets before coming to 4408, which will be on your left.
Those of you who are sophisticated about addresses will recognize that Van Buren is in the "third alphabet" of the DC street naming system. You may also think that 4408 should be east of 44th Avenue. Instead, it's just west of 44th Ave.. Park on the south side of the street (across the street from our house). There is no parking on the north side of the street. If you park on the North side of the street you COULD BE TOWED, although this is unlikely (last time, they knocked on the door to warn us and did not issue tickets).
